Employment of Non-Serving Spouse
It is possible for spouses to work in Brunei either for a company in the UK or for a company in Brunei.
Working in Brunei for a local company
If you choose to accept a position in Brunei, you will need to replace your Dependant visa with an Employment visa*. This has implications that you must research thoroughly and take into account. For example: the loss of your dependant status means you can no longer use RBAF medical services and you will no longer be covered by RBAF insurance. You may also lose your right to National Insurance credits if you start to work.
*Please note that you will need both an Employment Visa and an Employment Pass to work in Brunei.
Working for a UK employer, for the UK Garrison or self employment.
You may choose to work from home for a UK company and while the hours can be difficult, it is possible to make this work. You home internet is generally stable enough to manage video calls and normal office internet load. You may also choose to take a job on the UK Garrison.
There are no hard and fast rules for overseas working, and everyone will have differing questions and solutions depending on their circumstances. If you choose to work for a UK employer while in Brunei, it is advised that you seek both tax advice from your tax advisor, and legal advice with regards to health and safety, employer liability and insurance. Remember to take advice from HMRC, you may need to submit tax returns even if you are employed by a UK employer, or you may be eligible for tax relief.
Training and Education
Working in Brunei may not be an option for you. It may not be practical or feasible for you due to childcare availability, lack of suitable jobs, for tax reasons or because of your visa status. There are other opportunities to help fill the career gap. You may be able to access training and education opportunities and gain new skills or qualifications. Some spouses find volunteer roles that suit their interests and skills such as in the Loan Service Thrift Store or in a local animal shelter.
