Social Media
Social Media Guidelines:
We are ambassadors for the UK Military in Brunei, and it is important that we all respect Bruneian society and do not inadvertently cause offence to our hosts.
Inappropriate use of social media and Whatsapp has created difficult situations and embarrassment to the Loan Service Team in the past. This has occurred when pictures or comments posted for private use by individuals have inadvertently been released to a broader audience.
Before posting electronic content, all members of Loan Service should consider the consequences and ensure that the content is appropriate for the potential range of audiences.
Any person, serving or family member, who brings the positive name of the Loan Service Team or the UK Armed Forces into disrepute through inappropriate postings on social media or messaging groups can expect to be held accountable for doing so.
Areas to avoid drawing attention to (but not exhaustively) are:
Alcohol consumption by any member of Loan Service in any location while in Brunei.
Challenges to the Bruneian Royal Family and its direction.
Direction, laws and regulations of the Bruneian Government.
The Malay Islamic Monarchy philosophical approach.
Please don’t send messages or post social media posts which contain lewd or offensive comments, and don’t air personal grievances publicly even on Loan Service specific groups.
LSSO 201 provides further guidance on the use of e-mails and social media.
Security:
While the terrorist threat is considered low in Brunei, while on leave we travel into areas where the terrorist threat is higher. You should remain aware that social media can cause you to be compromised. Ensure you read LSSO 203 and any FCO advice before travelling.
Even though we might all be aware of the security challenges social media presents, many in our community employ Amahs, who are not aware. There have been past incidents where Amahs have posted details about their employers and even uncontrolled photographs of their employers children on their personal Facebook pages.
