Passports and Visas
*Please see LSSO 111 for in depth discussion.
Passports
You and your family must arrive with indate passports, which should be valid for at least a minimum of 6 months beyond your end of tour date. If you require a new passport either prior to assignment or during your time in Brunei, you are entitled to claim for a 53 page passport. A supply of 4 passport photographs for each member of the family should be brought to Brunei. All passports are required by the Department of Immigration to obtain appropriate visas, and will be returned. Please note, this process can take up to 30 days.
Passport renewal can take some time.
Options:
Engage with the Global Admin Office (GAO) (remotely) and complete a digital application via the UK Passport office service giving as much time as possible (10 weeks+). Once the digital application is submitted and the GAO have sent their HR letter on, you must send your current passport back via DHL. As soon as the passport office receive your current passport, they will issue and despatch your new one. You will be able to reclaim the cost of a standard service passport renwal via JPA.
You can complete the renewal process privately online as a private citizen, but you will not be able to reclaim at public expense.
Send an email to GAO requesting authorisation to obtain an over-the-counter passport, if granted this will allow you to attend the passport office in UK and pay for an over-the-counter passport and claim back a maximum of the standard service passport renewal. If you choose this option, you will need to book secure an appointment online prior to travel.
Please inform the SA LST if you intend to renew your passport, but bear in mind that any risk of delay or loss in the postal system lies firmly with the applicant.
On receipt of a new passport you must engage with SA LST to recommence the visa transfer process in Brunei.
Visa
You will receive a multi-entry visa, either an Employment Visa, Dependents Visa or Sosial Visa. Once these have been issued there will be no restrictions placed on your movement.
For those families who have children at boarding school there are two options for visas:
1. Boarding school children who are able to travel with their parents at the start of the tour because the date coincides with a school holiday can be issued with a multi entry visa at the same time as the rest of the family. This will cover the whole period of the parents’ tour. Please note that passports may be with held for a period of up to 30 days to allow visa processing. If you choose this route please apply for the necessary visas through the Brunei High Commission in London.
2. Boarding school children unable to be in Brunei at the start of the tour can travel as tourists, and will receive a 30-day tourist visa in their passport. In this case you will not require a visa stamp from the Brunei High Commission, in London. If your children will be remaining for longer than 30 days, you should consider applying for full dependent’s visa.
Female service personnel with Male spouses (regardless of status), are to note that their husband will not receive full dependents status due to Host Nation customs and traditions, however, they will be able to apply for a Multi Entry Sosial visa, which must be renewed every 12 months.
