Golf
There are a number of Loan Service members, both male and female, who play golf regularly. Some are members of local clubs, others pay as they play. The golf courses in Brunei are world class, and you will find that many members of the Brunei Armed Forces enjoy playing golf. There is a golf course on Berakas Kem, which is cheap to join. It is maintained enough for practice but unsuitable for serious golfers.
There are 5 golf courses across Brunei:
The Empire Country Club - A Jack Nicklaus Signature championship golf course with superior playing surfaces, distinct elevation changes, and flood lighting. Also offers a driving range, professional tuition and a Pro Shop.
The Royal Brunei Golf Club - Designed by Ronald Fream, this course offers tight, steep fairways woven throughout dense natural jungle and bunkers.
Pantai Mentiri - The oldest club in Brunei, deisgned by Ronald Fream, with water hazards at many of the holes and wide fairways.
RBA Golf Club - Designed by Max Wexler, this course offers artistically shaped bunkers and naturally flowing waterways.
The Panaga Golf Club in Seria is essentially a links golf course, with the unusual feature that all the internal ponds and ditches are inundated by the sea each high tide.
Slightly farther afield, just across the border in Malaysia, there are several good courses in Miri and Labuan. As with the others, you can ‘pay and play’.
Prior to joining any clubs, it is strongly suggested that you go and play with a member. Some courses change significantly during the dry and rainy seasons. By far the best course in Brunei and the most expensive, is the Empire, but you get what you pay for.
