Cinema and Bowling

Cinemas

There are plenty of cinemas around Bandar, offering a good level of comfort. However, lots of the films you see being released in the UK are never given cinematic release dates here. This may be because it would not be popular in Brunei, it is not deemed suitable for a Bruneian audience or it has been censored for other reasons.

Many of the bigger Western films do appear in the listings, sometimes when they are released in the UK, or on occasion you will need to wait a bit longer. Films are often censored for language and content, but this does not have to spoil your viewing of them.

There is a thriving film industry in Asia and if you are up for trying new things, going to see Hong Kong, Malaysian, Korean, Japanese and Indian films is eye opening and refreshing. You will find that these movies have triple language subtitles.

By far the most popular cinema especially with young people is the Mall Cineplex in Gadong. There are also cinemas at One City and Aman Hills Shopping Malls. There is also a small 3 screen cinema in the grounds of the Empire Hotel which is open to non members.

Unfortunately, there is no 3D cinema in Brunei. It can be very cold in movie theatres due to the air conditioning. It is recommended that you bring a shawl or long sleeved top with you.

Bowling Alleys

Bowling alleys are much the same as in the UK with bumpers and ramps available if you need them. Don’t forget to request a shoe size up and bring your socks!
